The Problem

When dialling a phone number on your Snom D785, you may notice the phone automatically sends the call before you finish entering all the digits. This happens because of a setting called the inter-digit timeout, which controls how long the phone waits after you press the last digit before it assumes you are done dialling.

Think of it like an elevator door. After you press your floor button, the door waits a few seconds for anyone else to get on. If nobody presses another button, the door closes, and the elevator starts moving. The inter-digit timeout works the same way: the phone waits a set number of seconds after each keypress, and if no new digit is entered, it dials the number.

By default, this timeout is set to just a few seconds, which can be too short for users who need extra time to look up or enter long numbers, account codes, or international dialling sequences.

The Solution

You can increase the inter-digit timeout through the phone's web interface. This gives you more breathing room between keypresses before the phone auto-dials.

Step 1: Find the Phone's IP Address

On the Snom D785, press the Settings button (gear icon) on the phone, then navigate to Information > System Info. The phone's IP address will be displayed at the top of the screen.

Step 2: Access the Web Interface

Open a web browser on a computer that is on the same network as the phone. In the address bar, type http:// followed by the phone's IP address (for example, http://192.168.1.100) and press Enter.

If prompted for credentials, the default administrator password is 0000 (four zeros). If this does not work, your administrator may have configured the phone with different credentials.

Step 3: Navigate to the Account Settings

In the left-hand menu of the web interface, click on Identity 1 (or whichever identity/line you want to adjust). This opens the configuration page for that SIP account.

Step 4: Adjust the Inter-Digit Timeout

Look for the Inter-Digit Timeout setting on the identity configuration page. This value is measured in seconds and controls the delay between the last digit pressed and the phone automatically dialling.

Change the value to a higher number. For example, setting it to 8 gives you eight seconds between keypresses before the phone dials. A value between 6 and 10 seconds works well for most users who find the default too fast.

Step 5: Save Your Changes

Click Apply to activate the setting, then click Save at the top of the page to store the change permanently. If you skip the Save step, the setting will be lost if the phone reboots or loses power.

Tips

• This setting is configured per identity (line). If your phone has multiple lines registered, you will need to repeat the process for each one.
• If you use a dial plan on your Hosted PBX, it may override this behaviour by matching and sending the number before the timeout expires. If you are still experiencing issues after adjusting this setting, check with your administrator to review the dial plan rules.
• You can also bypass the timeout entirely by pressing the checkmark/dial softkey or lifting the handset after entering the full number, which sends the call immediately without waiting.
• Avoid setting the timeout too high (e.g., 30 seconds), as this will cause a noticeable delay every time you dial, even after you have finished entering the number.
